Gout is more than an inconvenient occasional pain in the foot.  Gout attacks and elevated uric acid levels are indicators of a serious health condition associated with an increased risk of death and other co-morbid conditions.

Imagine the pain a patient would be in with shards of glass inside their joints and accumulating throughout the body. Only the shards aren't glass, they are needle-like crystals of uric acid that can feel like a cutting knife. Uric acid is a natural byproduct of protein metabolism in our bodies and when uric acid production and elimination are normal it is usually filtered out of the body painlessly by the kidneys. But when there's too much of the acid in the bloodstream, it begins to accumulate throughout the body and then erupts in gout atttacks/flares which can completely disable patients for more than a week at a time.

Gout impacts 8.3 million individuals in the US and up to 3% of the population in other developed countries. The majority of patients with gout are either not treated or inadequately treated leading to deposit of urate crystals througout the body, debilitating attacks and other chronic health conditions.  Patients with gout have high rates of chronic health conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease) and gout has been identified as an independent predictor of increased mortailty.

More must be done to identify patients with gout and help patients reach uric acid targets improving their overall health and eliminating the devastating impact of untreated chronic gout.
